CHARACTER INFO

Character: Xie Lian
Canon: Heaven Official's Blessing - end of Volume 4 (novel)
Age: 800+

Background Information: Wiki!

Personality:

At first glance, Xie Lian is a serene soul, he smiles easily and is the first to leap to help when someone is in need. Despite the deep trauma he has been through, that very nearly turned his soul dark, Xie Lian nonetheless tends to think the best of people, trusting in their actions, even if they may come from a nefarious background. It may be naive in some ways, but he is very accepting of people based on how they behave around him. Hua Cheng is arguably the most obvious example of this, for despite being an exceedingly powerful Ghost King, Xie Lian trusts him completely, to the point of defending him to other heavenly officials, and even the heavenly emperor himself. Overall, Xie Lian is an incredibly compassionate man, with a kind heart and the desire to help those around him.

This was not always the case, for after he met with great tragedy in the event of his kingdom's fall, Xie Lian very nearly turned to vengeance and cruelty, but it was thanks to the kindness of one single farmer who lent him his bamboo hat on a hot day, he swerved at the last moment. After this devastating self realization, Xie Lian was thoroughly humbled, his aching heart settling into gentleness, and while it is still possible to rile him to anger under the correct circumstances - if one knows how to push his buttons properly - it is a rare occasion, and he tends to face both people and problems with kindness and an open heart, always ready to help when duty arises, and quick to give others the benefit of the doubt.

Xie Lian's first and most aggressively insistent dream in life was to save the common people, to protect the simple folk. As crown prince, it was his duty to see to the safety and happiness of the people of Xianle, and this was easily his most dear and heartfelt desire. So deep was this desire that, after ascending to godhood, when his kingdom was in danger he could not help himself, and intervened to assist despite the knowledge and warning that gods were neither to meddle in human affairs, nor to show themselves to people without express permission from the heavens. Despite this, Xie Lian refused to give up, and fought an increasingly bloody and painful war, a spreading plague, and political unrest, all of which exhausted him thoroughly, to the brink of nearly forgetting himself.

Though Xianle is now long gone, save for the brief moment his heart faltered into vengeance, Xie Lian never entirely let go of that dream. He no longer carries the youthful ideology of his own perceived invincibility and ability to right any wrong, but he will still do everything in his power to help those who cannot help themselves, be they lofty gods in the heavens, or simple mortal townsfolk. He is quite protective of children especially, and will leap into harm's way to protect those dear to him, even if it means taking an injury, as he did for his erstwhile student, Lang Qianqiu. Though it brought him grave injury and even graver consequences, Xie Lian did not hesitate to deflect a blow that would have otherwise killed his once protege. Overall, Xie Lian's main driving force is his compassion and desire to help, to make what differences he can, however small, for in the end he believes that every life has weight and meaning.

As for flaws, Xie Lian certainly has many. In his youth, his haughty arrogance and overabundant belief of himself was what ultimately led to his downfall, as well as the doom of Xianle. He erred terribly in his attempt to defy fate, for Xianle was destined to fall regardless of his interference, and despite his hard work and tenacity, destiny found a way to achieve its goal, flying in the face of his greatest dreams. As punishment for his foolishness, Xie Lian had to watch his beloved country burn, its people desperate and dying from a terrible plague unleashed to counter his own involvement in the war.

Though he has grown past his arrogance, Xie Lian nevertheless can't help but to want to help, even to his own detriment, and he will sometimes meddle in affairs that are not his own if it means he is able to assist a dear friend, a companion, or even a complete stranger. He is also incredibly trusting, potentially to a fault, willing to let people in close where they can harm his bleeding heart. His greatest regret is surely his second ascension to the heavens, which he felt so strongly that he did not deserve that he requested banishment from the heavenly emperor, receiving another cursed shackle for it, that limited his spiritual power and dispersed his luck. This lack of luck affects him daily, and Xie Lian often finds himself in the worst predicaments that others may never encounter, and he is unable to naturally roll anything higher than snake eyes on a pair of dice. Truly he has become an unfortunate and unlucky god.

He's also an awful cook.

4) Optional: What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?

Aside from his kindness, which is truly extraordinary, Xie Lian's terrible luck that haunts him like a ghost in his footsteps is easily one of the most remarkable things about him. Most of his encounters tend to turn into worst case scenarios, and not only does this affect him, it also affects the people around him, for even the other gods who occasionally accompany him on various missions complain about how their luck plummeted while working with him. Shi Qingxuan, the Wind Master, is especially guilty of complaining about this, always remarking how there's never a dull moment when traveling with the crown prince. Without Hua Cheng feeding him some of his luck, Xie Lian will always inevitably lose any gamble, trip into holes that did not seem to be there moments ago, or find constant pebbles in his shoes.

ARMADA SELECTION

Paladins or Corsairs!

Xie Lian is a god from the heavens, which means he is part of the very foundation of order and stability, which seems to suit the Paladins quite well. While he has in the past been quite defiant of the heavens' rules, currently he is much more relaxed, and tends to go with the flow, respecting the rules and carrying out his duties. Still, he is different enough from his peers, always following his own code, that I could see him fitting in well with the Corsairs as well, so either will work!
